Industry Hour

History

Industry Hour was developed in 2019 by the School of Engineering Advising Hub (SoE Hub) as a way to support Undeclared Engineering students who wish to learn about the industries that correspond with each engineering major. It was inspired by the 1-credit course, Introduction to Better World Engineering, that dedicates each of its weekly seminars to one of Rensselaer’s engineering majors. In the course, students hear from a faculty representative from each engineering department. They discuss the major’s curriculum requirements, the department’s research, and the connected industry as a whole.

The SoE Hub’s goal of adding Industry Hour as a program to follow this Monday afternoon course is to compliment the information students learned during the seminar by introducing them to Rensselaer alumni in the field, and current students who have had professional work experiences such as internships and/or co-ops. Through Industry Hour, students are given the opportunity to learn about the day-to-day activities of different jobs, employers, and industries. Through a question and answer format, students are able to make an informed decision about their major in their first semester of college, from a personable and professional panel.

The Current Mission

To connect students with the industry attached to each engineering major by hosting a weekly panel with two alumni and one current Rensselaer student who has completed professional work experiences and/or undergraduate research.
