President Shirley Ann Jackson Receives National Medal of Science

Troy, N.Y. -- The Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been presented with the 2014 National Medal of Science, the highest honor for scientific achievement bestowed by the United States government. It was presented today by President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony. The award honors individuals deserving of special recognition for their outstanding cumulative contributions to knowledge in the physical, biological, mathematical, engineering, or behavioral or social sciences, in service to the nation.

Discovery of Rules for CRISPR Advance Metabolic Engineering

Discovery of rules that govern a variation of the CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing method makes it possible to use living cells to manufacture valuable metabolic compounds like pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) have developed new tools for controlling the signaling pathways in cells to manufacture compounds, dialing down production of unwanted compounds, and increasing production of valuable compounds.

The Burt Swersey Inventor’s Studio Established at Rensselaer

 

Troy, NY – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) President Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., has announced that the Institute has received a significant gift from The Lemelson Foundation to establish the Burt Swersey Inventor’s Studio, reinforcing the next generation of inventors and entrepreneurs. The studio will be formally dedicated on Friday, May 6, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on the Rensselaer campus.

Meet the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Class of 2020

Troy, NY – The incoming Class of 2020 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) promises to be an exceptional group. According to Office of Enrollment Management, based on unprecedented demand for a Rensselaer education, the Institute will likely enroll the largest freshman class in the Rensselaer history. While it is hard to predict the exact number of freshmen who will matriculate in the fall, Rensselaer expects the class size to be greater than the 1,511 students the Institute had planned to enroll.

Troy, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute President Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson today announced that Ertharin Cousin, Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme, will address Rensselaer graduates on May 28, 2016, during the 210th Commencement Ceremony. Cousin will receive an honorary degree at the ceremony for her contributions as leader of the world’s largest humanitarian organization and her role in raising awareness of food insecurity and chronic malnutrition.

Rensselaer Professors To Be Inducted Into Medical and Biological Engineering Elite

Five members of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) faculty have been selected for induction into the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

The AIMBE College of Fellows includes the top 2 percent of medical and biological engineers in the country, representing the most accomplished and distinguished engineering and medical school chairs, research directors, professors, innovators, and successful entrepreneurs.
